The Art of Being Still

What is being still in God?

I have a friend who tells me to be still in God. I try so hard to think of what this means, but to be quite honest, I really don’t know what it means.  I think of sitting still and not moving, because as humans that is what our definition of being still is, but being still in God, no clue.  Then one day, I began to really think about just what being still in God means.

Listening to too many voices

I was talking to a friend about a situation I was in.  I knew in my heart that I was to be still in God, but as well know, we can listen to others way too much in situations like this.  We have people who mean well trying to give us advice and usually that advice, that is meant to help us, can cause us more harm than good.

My friends were telling me to do things, to have actions that would make this thing happen.  I knew that was not what I was supposed to do.  I knew that I had to simply be still in God.

It does not mean being physically still

Being still in God does not necessarily mean sitting still and not moving, although it can mean that.  It means not doing anything physically.  When we are trusting God to do something and we feel that we need to be still, we need to not do anything and let God work.  Some people might say this kind of means to let go and let God.  We can still pray about this thing, but we are not to try to do anything to make it happen unless truly led by God.  We need to let Him work.

It can be soooo hard

This can be the hardest thing to do, because we all like to do things to make things happen.  What we do not realize is that sometimes when we interfere, we might mess things up. We can even prolong what God is doing, which is not really good.

Just Be Still

So, when you feel as if God is telling you to be still, remember it does not mean to not do anything.  You can pray and pray and pray, but do not take action.  Be patient for God to do what He needs and listen to Him in everything you do.

The Problem

Before you ever had the problem, God had the solution.  I have heard this many times.  I mean many times.  Each time, I still wonder, “Does God really know our problems before they happen?  Does He really know how we will act?  Does He really have the solution?”

The Answer

The answer to all of the above is probably yes.  God knows our problems before we do.  He knows exactly what we will face and when.  He knows what is coming our way and I firmly believe He puts things across our paths to strengthen us before they get to us.  Then, when they arrive, we are ready for them, well mostly.

God Knows Us

I also believe God knows us so well, that He knows how we will act when these problems arise.  He knows exactly what we will say and do when they come upon us.  Our actions are no surprise to Him. We might even be negative towards God when they happen, but He knows we are human.  He knows that as humans, we are not going to act the right way all of the time.  When certain problems cross our paths, He knows exactly how we are going to act and He just hopes we end up turning to Him.

He Has the Solution

God also has the solution.  He had the solution long before the problem happened.  As a matter of fact, I am almost certain that in some cases He is either laughing or shaking His head at us as we try to figure out what to do.

He probably laughs hysterically when we try to make things happen in our own will.  He tries to point us in the right direction and send the right people to us, but in the end, we have to make the right choice.  He probably even shakes His head at some of the things we look at as options.

He Knows All

In the end, He knows all.  He knows what we are going through and has the solution for us.  This is why we are not to worry.  We are not to worry and to trust Him to direct our steps in the situation.
